We had a really positive and useful meeting with the Darfield Amenity Society yesterday evening at the Maurice Dobson Museum as part of the presentation by students from Sheffield University School of Architecture.

In Darfield the students have been working with people in Darfield to look at options for the future of the museum. Everyone was hugely impressed with the commitment, enthusiasm and energy of the students and the work they’ve produced. They’ve looked at immediate, medium and long term opportunities. This has resulted in a new logo, promotional material, portable exhibition equipment, a model, analysis, a feasibility study and a short film. All this has really captured the spirit of the museum and provided all those involved at the museum with inspiration for the future.
At Wentworth the students have been focusing on the walled garden for the Trust, with great results. Their analysis of the site, access opportunities and suggested future options, along with consultation resources will be so important for the Trust.
These project have made a great difference to both to the work practice of the students in their future working lives but also moving forward the thinking of the groups involved. With both groups it has already helped them think in new ways about how their sites could develop, appeal to more visitors and generate more income.
It’s also positive for Barnsley and the DVLP as we’ll be featured twice at the final presentations in Sheffield on Friday in front of all 13 groups that have been working across the region. We supported a group of students working with the Friends of Hemingfield Colliery last year and they won Live Project of the year. We’re hopeful the same will happen this year.
