As part of the DVLP’s on-going partnership with Sorby Natural History Society we are trying to build up a clearer picture of the biodiversity on a number of key sites around the Dearne Valley, including former pit top sites. Many brownfield sites can be deceiving to the eye and actually hold a vast wealth of plant and animal diversity, many particularly notable for their invertebrate diversity.

This site in particular is believed to hold an incredibly large diversity of notable invertebrates following a site survey in previous years by Buglife.

The group will be leading a special recording day on site, recording rare and unique invertebrates on this fantastic reclaimed pit top site. With more wildlife data we are able to better manage sites and educate more individuals about such rare and valuable biodiversity.

Tutors will be on hand throughout the visit to assist with survey and identification techniques. No previous experience required any skill level welcome. Just bring sensible outdoor clothing, any recording/field kit and a packed lunch.

We will be meeting at 11am at the green gated entrance to New Park Springs accessible from Clayburn Road, Grimethorpe past the industrial estate. There is roadside parking outside the entrance.
