Project Title: ‘Brassed Off & Beyond’

Project Summary:
The project engaged young people in the Dearne Valley with their history and heritage through the themes in the film Brassed Off.
The project encouraged young people to look at, explore and be inspired by the heritage of their local area.
The project commissioned a professional writer to work with the project team to create an engagement programme around the theme of the film Brassed Off and the community of Grimethorpe.
The engagement programme consisted of at least 6 workshops with a min. of 10 young people aged 14-25 from within the local community of Grimethorpe and the wider Dearne Valley.
The young people were encouraged to research the themes and locations of the film eg.local industry, community, family, home life, mental health, local environment, music, perceptions & changes of the area.
Activities included attending a performance of Brassed Off at the Lamproom Theatre in Barnsley, Examining the script & speaking to local people who had a connection with the village at the time of filming.
The project enabled the young people to create a publication of their written work as a legacy of the project, this was available online and in print, and can be used to inspire future project such as trails around the area.
The project supported the young people to perform at Poetry Festival in March 2017.
