New DVLP Postcards

As part of our 'Promoting the Dearne' project, we have taken delivery of a new set of four postcards.

The four postcards show the diverse range of projects the DVLP are involved in:

Protecting Key Sites – Barnsley Main was the site of the worst mining disaster in English history with the loss of 383 men and boys. The DVLP is working to secure the future of Barnsley Main, increase access to the wider site and commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Oaks Disaster in December 2016, One postcard shows Barnsley Main as it is today. The other postcard shows one of the walks the DVLP organised from Christ Church at Ardsley (the site of the original memorial to those that died) to Kendray (where there is a memorial to the rescuers).

Art of the Dearne – This project uses arts to engage the local community to collect and tell the stories of the Dearne and the people through oral history, photography, exhibitions, creative writing and workshops.  Wombwell Woods Weekend 2016 was a huge success and involved den building, storytelling and a birdbox discovery trail.

Surveying the Dearne – This project aims to gain a greater understanding of key environmental sites across the Dearne, in order that they can be protected, preserved and enhanced for the future.  Thousands of records have been collected including the beautiful Hoverfly (Chrysotoxum Festivum)

The postcards are available free of charge from the Visitor Centre at Elsecar Heritage Centre.
