Oaks Colliery Disaster Anniversary

150 years after the worst mining disaster in English history the community of Barnsley has come together to remember and reflect.

The formal period of commemoration for the 150th anniversary of the Oaks Colliery Disaster lasted from Sunday 11th to Wednesday 14th December. Events and activities took place across Barnsley and thousands of people have been involved.

Millions of people across Yorkshire and beyond will have seen the media coverage from the Barnsley Chronicle, Yorkshire Post, Daily Mirror, BBC News, BBC Radio Sheffield, BBC Look North and ITV Calendar.

The dedication and passion of the organisations and communities involved has been an inspiration. The Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership would like to thank every body who has been involved in organising and attending all the events that have taken place this week.

Here are a selection of photographs from the event organised by the Barnsley Main Heritage Group and formal gathering at Barnsley Town Hall on the date of the first explosion.
