Peter Day’s father and brother were killed in the 1847 Oaks Disaster. His sister, Mary, was killed in the 1842 Hopwood Disaster. Another sister, Elizabeth, then gave evidence to the inquest that lead to women and children under 10 being banned from working below ground.
