Adele Howitt is creating a ceramic based artwork in response to the theme of ‘The Forgotten Potteries of the Dearne Valley’. Her finished work will then form the major part of an exhibition at the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley, from 30 January 2016.

Adele was keen to not only look a the history of sites that once had potteries but also work with the communities there today. Swinton, Mexborough, Wat
h-upon-Dearne and Hoyland all had historic potteries that are largely forgotten.

Workshops have been delivered at Swinton Lock Activity Centre and Montgomery Hall, Wath-upon-Dearne, with further ones booked in for Hoyland and Swinton libraries. Participants have not only enjoyed getting their hands messy with clay but have also been surprised that the industry was once so important.
